Prickly Pear Cactus

Genus Opuntia
Cactus Family (Cactaceae)

Prickly Pear Cactus
(Opuntia polyacantha)

This is the most common species of prickly pear in most areas of Utah, but there are others. They sometimes hybridize with each other, so it is hard to tell one kind from another.
The prickly pears grow in large clumps of flattened and jointed pads. The flowers grow on the edges of the pads.
